Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant for an ongoing contract role to assist our client's finance team with a targeted Accounts Payable cleanup project. In this position, you will play a critical role in resolving a high-volume backlog, tracing historical payment anomalies, and ensuring our sub-ledger accuracy is fully restored. Working alongside our AP support team, you will dive deep into unapplied cash records, reconcile complex accounts, and execute key journal entries. If you thrive on financial detective work, bank reconciliations, and bringing order to high-volume accounting data, this long-term contract is an ideal fit.

Responsibilities
- Clearing a high-volume backlog of unapplied and backdated payments, restoring accuracy to the sub-ledger.
- Systematically retrieve supporting documentation for historical checks and conduct deep-dive research to trace payment origins and invoice discrepancies.
- Reconstruct transaction histories to document clear, auditable explanations for why specific payments were not applied to their corresponding invoices.
- Prepare and post precise journal entries to correct misallocations, write-offs, and ledger timing differences.
- Perform detailed bank and account reconciliations to ensure cleared checks, unapplied funds, and outstanding items match general ledger balances.
- Collaborate with and guide additional Accounts Payable team members to streamline payment matching workflows and prevent future backlogs.
